FAQ

What happens during a session?

During a session with Lorne Salt Therapy, you will be shown into our custom designed salt therapy room. As you sit back and relax on our recliner chairs, you will breathe in the fine dust of pharmaceutical salts, ground and dispersed into the air by special machines. As you experience the therapeutic effects of the salts, you are encouraged to enjoy the tranquility of the environment, and are welcomed to bring your own book or mp3 player.

You will also have access to the steam room before or after your session, allowing you to fully indulge and rejuvenate and enjoy the benefits of both treatments.

How long does a session last?

Sessions last for 45 minutes. We ask that you please arrive 10 minutes prior to your booked time.

How many people attend each session?

The Lorne Salt Therapy rooms are fitted with seating for up to six people.

What will I feel during the session?

A session at Lorne Salt Therapy is a soothing and revitalising experience. You may feel a slight tickle in your throat or nose as the salt acts on your respiratory system, and may experience a mild salty taste around your mouth. Many people do not, however, notice anything. You are encouraged to simply relax and breathe naturally, and enjoy the peaceful environment.

Is Lorne Salt Therapy suitable for children?

Salt therapy is available to people of all ages, including children.

What should I wear?

We advise you to wear light coloured clothing, as the fine salt particles may show up on darker clothes. Otherwise you are free to wear whatever you are comfortable in. You will be given shoe covers as you enter the room, to help keep the salt on the floor sterile and clean.

Which health conditions may Lorne Salt Therapy help with?

Salt therapy may benefit a number of medical conditions, primarily respiratory, skin and allergic conditions. These include:

  • Sinusitis
  • Asthma
  • Emphysema
  • Bronchitis
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Pneumonia
  • Hay fever
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis

We encourage patients with these conditions to look at salt therapy as a complimentary treatment that may help improve their symptoms. It is NOT intended as a replacement for medial therapy and all customers should continue to closely follow their treating doctor’s advice.

Salt therapy is also believed to improve general wellbeing and have relaxing properties for those not suffering any of the above conditions.

How does salt therapy work?

Pharmaceutical salts are believed to have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, which when inhaled can help alleviate mucous secretions and airway constriction. When absorbed into the skin, these properties have a number of benefits for several skin conditions. The salts are also a source of negative ions, which are believed to have several important therapeutic benefits.

Halogenerators grind the salts, consisting of sodium chloride, into tiny particles, and disperse these as an aerosol into the room. Salt concentrations, temperature and humidity are constantly monitored to ensure the optimal environment for the therapy to have its effects.

Are there any side effects?

Salt therapy is completely natural, and does not have any known adverse effects. Some customers may experience some mild skin irritation, however this is not common and usually ceases after a few sessions.

What questions will I be asked before I commence a session?

Prior to taking part in salt therapy, you will be asked about your health and any co-existing medical conditions you may have. In particular, we are interested in whether any of the following apply to you:

  • Current acute respiratory disease, or chronic lung insufficiency
  • Cardiac insufficiency
  • Internal bleeding
  • Hypertension
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Currently taking blood thinning medication
  • Currently on a prescribed salt restriction diet
